Winona bans bike from downtown sidewalks

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC)--  All around Rochester bike paths are constantly being built...whether near parks or in the company of motorists on the road.

Winona city council approved a new ordinance today, prohibiting cyclists from riding on the sidewalks in the downtown central business district.

The paths are to keep pedestrians, motorists, and the bicyclists themselves safe.

They felt it was important to get these rules in place before this weather gets warmer and more bikes are out.

This is a state statute that Winona adopted and made local provisions to.

In the city those under 16 years old, can ride on sidewalks outside the restricted area.

More than anything it's an attempt to get adult bicyclists off the sidewalks for the safety of everyone.
