AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- Two young men were killed early Saturday in a violent one-car crash south of Austin not far from Whispering Pines Ranch on 4th Street SE.  A third man was hurt and taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

The accident happened between 1:30 and 2 a.m. on the stretch of 4th St. SE also known as 540th Avenue, just north of the intersection of Co. Road 28/29th Avenue.

Mower County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Mensink says speed was a probable factor in the crash, as the northbound four-door sedan the men were riding in missed a curve on 4th St. SE, went into the west ditch, went through a wooden fence, snapped a tree in half, then snapped a telephone pole in half.

"Two of the men were ejected from the small car," said Deputy Mensink.  "I couldn't even tell what kind of car it was."

The vehicle came to rest in Tom Downey's front lawn.  "The car come across our yard and it landed on this side of our driveway, and it threw the battery out of the car," said Downey.  "It hit the corner of our porch and busted all over the side of the house."

Downey explained the splattered siding was not as important as the victims families. "This is a bad deal for everybody," he said.  "This stuff I can fix. The rest of it that happened I can't fix."

Family members of the victims are being notified, and Sheriff Therese Amazi has indicated that the names of the men killed will not be released until Monday morning.  There's no word on the condition of the man transported to St. Marys Hospital.

An accident reconstruction investigation was underway Saturday morning at the scene by an officer with the Minnesota State Patrol.
