Local running team sees health benefits from Chia Seed

ROCHESTER (KTTC) -- Last week we told you about a new health food craze.

But a local group of runners is saying not to dismiss it as just that.

Team R.E.D. meets several times a week.

A couple of their runners eat Chia Seed.

Those tiny seeds, used to create a head of hair on a Chia Pet, are actually loaded with protein, omega-3 and omega-6, high in antioxidants, and can even help stabilize your blood sugar.

It can also help you stay hydrated, a plus for runners like Tom O'Leary.

"Probably about a year and a half ago I started using it. We read some books and we've seen some great results from other athletes and we thought... if really strong athletes are using it, why aren't we?" O'Leary said.

He went on to say, "It's easy to add to your diet. It's flavorless. Put it in your oatmeal or a beverage."

It also helps the Tarahumara Indians, a Mexican tribe of super athletes who use these Chia seeds for energy.

"Beans, things like corn, good fresh water, and very basic shoes, very basic clothing and they're some of the best runners in the world," Runner Jay Widmer said.

O'Leary credits some of his success in faster running times to using the Chia Seed.

"My times have really dramatically improved," O'Leary said.

Team R.E.D. stands for "Run," "Eat," "Drink."

A local running group that started in 2009 has turned into a 150-plus member club.
