New section of Rochester trail to be added this Spring

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- It's no secret to the people who live here: Rochester has one of the best trail systems in the region, and another segment is ready to be added on.

It's not the biggest section of the Rochester trail system, but this segment will help connect pieces of the trail that already exist.

It may only be an 800 foot project.

I think it will be used quite a bit, said John Wellner of the Rochester Public Works

But it is a huge piece of the puzzle that makes up nearly 100 miles of trail through Rochester.

"The project is from Chateau to Clearwater, this being 52 and this is where West Circle Drive makes a curve to the south," said Wellner

The path will look similar to the others around town and will go along the fun running parallel to West Circle Drive.

"It connects to the entire network, I suppose the most recognizable trail is the Douglas Trail which is less than a mile to the west, but it connects into the entire city system," Wellner said

Proving that size does not matter.

"It's another segment and in this case, you could continue east and west across this area without having to cross circle drive which is pretty full of cars at various times of the day, said Wellner

This will also help to make things safer if you are traveling by bike or by foot.

"True there are signals that allow you to cross safely, however you can make this cross, this route without having to conflict with the cars that are using circle drive. It's one more segment in a pretty extensive path trail system that we have in the city," said Wellner

The project is being paid by a grant and construction looks to start as soon as the weather breaks.  It will be completed by the middle part of this coming June
