New drama for Bachmann as new congressional district maps come out

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KTTC/AP) -- The new political district maps are out, and already, there's drama over the redrawing of Minnesota's congressional district boundaries.  On the face of it, incumbent U.S. Representatives Michele Bachmann and Betty McCollum are pitted against each other in the same district.

But now Bachmann, a Republican, says she will run for re-election in the newly drawn 6th District anyway, avoiding a battle with Democrat McCollum in the 4th. The redrawn maps put both women in the 4th District.

Bachmann will avoid the general election matchup with McCollum by choosing the option open to veteran members of Congress, to choose to run in another district.  Members of Congress don't have to live in the district they represent.  McCollum is a six-term incumbent.

The redistricting is done every 10 years to reflect population shifts.

Bachmann says the newly drawn 6th District is still comprised of what she calls "the heart" of the district she was first elected to represent in 2006.
