COPY-Dayton: lawmakers should close Capitol for remodel

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Gov. Mark Dayton says state lawmakers should vote to kick him, themselves and everyone else out of the State Capitol for the four years that engineers say is necessary to make major renovations to the building.

Dayton says in his State of the State address Wednesday that Minnesota's Capitol is "wearing down and falling apart." Recent estimates have found the 1905 building needs $241 million in restoration work to make it safe for its occupants and protect its architectural importance.

Dayton says lawmakers should act now before someone is injured or worse and a public outcry results. He says a long relocation will be tough on the building's users but that they need to take an unselfish vote now to preserve the building for future generations.
