House on fire, man escapes by jumping from second story window

Updated:

STOCKTON, Minn. (KTTC) -- With four smoke detectors blaring, a rural Stockton man woke up to his house on fire early Sunday morning, and jumped from a second story window to escape the flames.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand says Darren Gereau, 39, reported smoke and flames all around him when the smoke detectors woke him up about 3 a.m. at his home at 25560 Almon Drive.

"He ran around to the other side of the house and got his dog out of its cage, then called 9-1-1, " said the sheriff.  "He's in pain from jumping, he suffered smoke inhalation, and his whole house is gone."

Brand says Gereau is a member of his mounted posse, and the other posse members are talking about what to do to help him.
