KASSON, Minn. (KTTC) -- When a fire broke out Thursday Night in Kasson, Shawn Plotnik was unable to salvage any items, but rescued his future, 5-year-old step daughter.

"I said 'Fire! Fire!' and she didn't want to move ,so I went and picked here up and brought her," said Plotnik.

Around 5:15 p.m., at 67 Central Ave., Shawn was in another room, when a log from their fireplace had rolled onto the floor.

"And I came back out, and the gate was open and a piece of wood was by the chair, and the chair had already started on fire," Plotnik said.

The home was destroyed.  Shawn's fiancee was at parent-teacher conferences at the time for her other children.

"I called (my fiancee), her dad, and my mom. And let her know everyone was okay."

When his fiancee Amber arrived, her home was gone, but her family was there waiting.

Plotnik said "she was really scared, and worried about losing everything. She's got some pictures in the back, but she was happy that everyone was okay."

Plotnik also says the home was owned his fiancee and her father, and that he tried to extinguish the fire himself, but there was just too much smoke by that time.
