Winona county history center to be restored

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC)--  It's been a long time in waiting, but the Historical Center in Winona will soon be restored.

This all thanks to a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society.

The $10 million grant is being dispersed to a variety of Minnesota Establishments. The grant supports efforts to preserve the historical and cultural heritage in Minnesota.

Wednesday 59 recipients were announced and the Winona County Historical Society was one.

Inside the former National Guard Armory the historical legacy lives on, but outside the work is just beginning.

It was around 1937 when the battlement was removed, and this cement cap was replaced on the top of the building. Now over 70 years later the building will be getting a new old look.

The Winona County Historical Society received a $156,000 grant to restore the battlements on top of the building.

Executive Director Mark Peterson states, "It's time really to rebuild this and do it right, to add the towers and bring those turrits up and put the flagpoles up there. It's just going to look so much better."

Work on the building will begin late spring and run through the summer.
