Welch Village invitational ski race

WELCH, Minn. (KTTC)-- Friday more than 270 high school students made their way up to Welch Village for the 37th annual ski race.

This ski race features teams from all across the state including Rochester.

Despite the lack of natural snow and the warm winter we have had so far, Welch Village had plenty of man-made snow, making it possible for all the high school ski teams to make their way down the slopes.

Brainerd competitors, Maddison and Ashley say, "Once you're on the hill you don't even think about it, and it's super fun. It's just getting through the starting gate."

Rochester competitor Calvin Austvold explains,  "It's in the gate when you have adrenaline, but when you're going down the course you kind of forget about everybody at the bottom."

Adrenaline led them through the competition, but it was their surroundings that led them through the day.

Pat and Ulvis Birznieks were there watching their granddaughter Ashley and they say, "It's just a fun atmosphere to see all the tents and everybody being nice and warm. A lot of comradery."

Students and parents pitched tests and had campfires.

They shared in laughter and great food. For some it is and will continue to be an annual tradition.

The Welch Village invitational is the longest running high school ski race in the country.
