Lake City police officer Shawn Schneider dies

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- After spending almost two weeks fighting for his life, Lake City police officer Shawn Schneider has died at the age of 32.

Officer Schneider had been listed in critical condition at Saint Marys Hospital since he was shot Dec. 19 outside a home in Lake City.

Since then, Schneider has been called a hero.

He was responding to a domestic call at a Lake City home on the 600 block of Lyon Avenue after a disagreement between a 17-year-old girl and her ex-boyfriend turned violent.

Court documents say Schneider had helped get the girl out of the home, when 25-year-old Alan Sylte, Jr. shot him in the head.

Schneider was taken by helicopter to Saint Marys Hospital.

Since then, there has been an outpouring of support for the officer and his family.

Several hundred well-wishers attended a makeshift prayer vigil Dec. 20 outside of Saint Marys Hospital.

Then the next day, more than 1,000 people poured into Patton Park in Lake City for another candlelight ceremony.

There, donations were taken for the family Schneider now leaves behind.

Officer Schneider is survived by his wife and three young children.
