Minnesotans take advantage of snow at Welch Village

WELCH, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Many of you may have been disappointed by our area's brown Christmas, but you're not the only ones.

It's taken a toll on some seasonal businesses.

Welch Village Ski and Snowboard Resort says numbers are down from last December, when we got hit with several snow storms.

However, numbers are still around average from past years.

"It's kind of hard to comprehend when you don't see snow in your backyard to know that we made a lot of snow in December and we have all of our runs open," Stephanie Prink said, of Welch Village.

Runs have a 2 to 3 foot base of snow.

Welch Village says it will make more snow when it gets colder.

Many people are taking advantage of the snow, like Kelly Madson of Rochester.

His twin daughters spent Thursday skiing with their friends from Dallas, who are also twins.

Their father, Jeff McFadden, came to Minnesota to snowmobile.

Since there's no snow, his family is enjoying a Minnesota winter through Welch Village.

"You know just getting the chance to get your kids to experience something like this... when it's [Texas] dirt and dry and you come here and there's this mountain. It's a great experience for them," McFadden said.

If you've been dreaming of a white New Years, there will be fireworks at Welch Village on New Years Eve as well as Family Festival Day on Jan. 1.
