Cresco fire rescue responds to back-to-back emergencies

CRESCO, Iowa (KTTC)-- Two emergency incidents at businesses in Cresco, Iowa are under investigation.

The first happened at an auto body shop on 2nd Avenue Southeast. People in the area say they heard an explosion around 3:40 p.m. Tuesday and a fire engulfed the building soon after.

The owner of the building explained he had been renting out the garage to man who was running a startup mechanic service.  He said the man was doing work to a van with another worker when flames ignited inside.

The siding to the neighbors house had melted and the garage was a total loss despite the efforts of a nearby business employee. "All of a sudden a gentleman came in and grabbed the fire extinguisher," said Kendra Balik, a bartender at the nearby Hideaway Lounge.  "We all came out an looked. By that time it was too late and they just said call 9-1-1. So we called 9-1-1, the fire department came right away... this place was just up in blaze."

The Cresco Fire Department got the blaze under control within a few minutes and no one was seriously injured.

The second emergency occurred at the Cresco Food Technologies building also on 2nd Ave SE around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.  There was no fire, but the owner explained there had been an explosion.  The damage to the building was extensive as the plant was shut down Wednesday.   "We'll start talking about what we need to do to get to the next step," says building owner Willie Hendrickson. "Our construction guy here is talking about getting to work right away with this and bringing the plant back up again."

One person was injured in the incident. They were transported to the hospital by ambulance with unknown injuries. An investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway.
