LAKE CITY, Minn. (KTTC) -- A Lake City police officer is still in critical condition Tuesday after being shot twice in the line of duty Monday.

Multiple crews responded to a report of an officer down around 8:40 a.m. Monday on the 600 block of West Lyon Avenue.  Officer Shawn Schneider was responding to a domestic situation.

Investigators said Schneider was shot in the head and neck, and  is in critical condition at Saint Marys Hospital.  He is said to be responding, including squeezing his wife's hand. Schneider is married, has three school aged kids and is a 9-year veteran of the Lake City Police Department.

The neighborhood near the scene was evacuated, while crews tried to make contact with the suspect inside the home.

The Lake City Police Department identified him as 25-year-old Alan J. Sylte Jr. of Hager City, Wisconsin.

SWAT teams entered the home on Lyon Avenue late Monday afternoon, where they found Sylte dead. It's unclear how he died. The medical examiner was been called to the scene.

Several schools including St. John's Evangelical Lutheran School, Lincoln High, middle schools and Bluff View Elementary were locked down most of the day. Around 7 p.m. Monday, parents were able to pick up their children.

Officers and deputies from all over southeastern Minnesota were on the scene, including Lake City, Goodhue and Wabasha counties, SWAT Teams from Olmsted and Wabasha counties and the Minnesota State Patrol.

A Facebook prayer page has been set up for Officer Shawn Schneider, click here if you'd like to leave your well-wishes.
