Man hospitalized after running pickup into tree

CANNON FALLS, Minn. (KTTC) -- It was a close call for a young man after running his pickup off the road and into a tree.  The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. Sunday near Cannon Falls when a Chevy S-10 pickup veered off County Road 17, went airborne off a driveway, and wound up on it's side in the ditch.

And it all happened on George Rehm's front lawn.

"Well we came home from church and it looked as if someone had driven a snowmobile across our driveway," said Rehm.

Rehm didn't think much of the tracks in the snow, but paid closer attention when rescue crews arrived in front of his house.  Rehm  explained he went outside and saw the law enforcement vehicle and a truck wrapped around a tree in the ditch on the east side of his property. "

The victim was described to be a 20 year old male. Mayo One had been auto launched but the man was taken to Saint Marys hospital by ambulance. "The speed (of the pickup) had to be tremendous," said Rehm.  "He entered the ditch west of the house. When he hit our driveway he went airborne."

The truck landed in the ditch roughly one hundred feet from Rehm's driveway.

"I don't know how he survived honestly," said Rehm. "It's a miracle that he did."

Sgt. Robert Troolin of the Goodhue County sheriff's department says alcohol played a factor in the wreck.

The extent of the driver's injuries are unknown.
