Dairyland Power closes 3 aging coal units

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- The Dairyland Power Cooperative says it will close three aging coal-burning units at its plant in western Wisconsin.

The La Crosse-based utility says maintenance costs and regulatory requirements are reasons the units in Alma will be shut down. All were built in the 1950s and generate just a fraction of the cooperative's power. Two other coal units at Alma will continue supplying the power network.

The La Crosse Tribune says the cooperative provides wholesale electricity to areas of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa.
