Construction to begin on Rochester intersection

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC)-- One of the busiest roadways in Rochester is getting a makeover and it's starting sooner than planned.

Originally, construction of the 65th street interchange was set to begin in 2012,.. with work on the 55th street project beginning after the interchange was complete. Now, that schedule is changing.

The city wants to use sale tax funds to pay for the interchange, but a vote that would extend the city's sales tax won't take place until November, meaning construction will begin in 2013.

Meanwhile, funds are already together for the first phase of the 55th street project, including widening of the bridge to add more turn lanes - so the city plans to move forward with the project first, starting in May.

The Rochester city project manager, Richard Freese says the project involves 4 phases over the next 25 years, "The first phase of the project which will involve the widening of the existing over pass at highway 52 to facilitate two lanes turning left to northbound on-ramp and southbound on-ramp."

In the coming years, the existing east frontage road will be moved further east and the entire overpass will be reconstructed, potentially as a diamond interchange.
