MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) -- A former Mason City police officer is appealing her firing over her handling of information in the abduction of a Mason City television anchor in 1995.

The Globe Gazette says Maria Ohl, whose dismissal was upheld last month by a city commission, has filed an appeal in Cerro Gordo County District Court.

The Mason City newspaper says Ohl acted as her own attorney at the Civil Service Commission and filed the appeal on her own behalf. No hearing date is set.

The firing stemmed from Ohl's handling of information in the abduction of KIMT-TV morning anchor Jodi Huisentruit, of Long Prairie, Minn. She was declared legally dead several years ago.

Ohl was terminated for violating several department policies, including neglect of duty and interfering with an investigation.
