Cancer researchers lobby Congressman Walz

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Cancer research experts gathered at Mayo Clinic Tuesday to talk about ways to ensure funding for future research projects.

They stressed to Congressman Tim Walz the importance of National Institutes of Health funding.

In 2010, Minnesota received more than $475 million from the NIH.

Mayo Clinic received more than $180 million, which translates into more than 4,000 local jobs.

Walz talked about how far medical research has come.

"Seeing the news when the human genome was decoded... my goodness that seems like ancient science now! Compared to where we've come down in the genetic markers and the things that are there. The Chancellor is right, it's becoming individualized healthcare," said Walz.
