Elderly woman dies after hit by car in pedestrian crosswalk

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) -- A trip to the Winona Farmers Market turns tragic for an elderly woman.

90-year-old Evelyn Shiel, of Winona, was walking across the street just before 8:30 a.m. on Saturday when she was struck by a car.

Winona Police Chief Paul Bostrack says 22-year-old Nicole Marie Golden, of Winona, struck Shiel in the pedestrian crosswalk at West 2nd Street and Main Street.

According to police, Shiel had the right-of-way when she was hit, just feet from her residence of Winhaven Court.

Several witnesses were on the scene including neighbor Tammy Austin.

"One shoe was there [pointing to street], the other was another place and everything was spilled out of her walker and her walker was crushed," Austin recalls.

Austin says that while witnesses waited for the ambulance, one person brought Shiel a blanket to stay warm; a pickle jar from her bag sat near by.

Shiel's friend of 57 years, Genevieve Bartz recalls, "She said, 'I haven't been to the farmers market since July and I wanna go so bad before they close.'"

She went on to say, "I heard the ambulance and I looked down and when I saw the way she was positioned, I had a feeling, I knew it wasn't going to be good."

Shiel was airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester where she died.

A police investigation continues, but Chief Bostrack says the intersection where it happened is controlled by four-way stop signs.

The chief says Golden failed to yield to the pedestrian, and told officers "she did not see the pedestrian until it was too late."

Chief Bostrack tells KTTC NewsCenter that after going over witness accounts, the driver "either did not come to a complete stop or did not stop" before striking the elderly woman.

The police chief says Golden was eastbound and was driving into the bright morning sun when it happened, and had two passengers in her car when it happened.

So far, no charges have been filed in the case.

Shiel's funeral service will be on Thursday at Central Methodist Church in Winona.

It begins at 11 a.m.
