DCI Agents shoot a Forest City Police Officer

FOREST CITY, Iowa (KTTC) -- A Forest City Police officer has been shot by an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Agent.  We now know the names of the Forest City Police Officer and two DCI agents that were involved in the shooting.

Thursday afternoon special agents, Chris Callaway and Steve Peterson, were interviewing Forest City Police Officer ,Thaddeus Ellenbecker about an on-going investigation into a fire that occurred at the P. D. on October 1st.

Following the interview at the Winnebago Sheriff's Office, Ellenbecker returned to his apartment in Forest City. The DCI Agents went there to check on him, and found Ellenbecker outside with a weapon. A struggle ensued, resulting in Ellenbecker being shot and injured.  The 34-year old is now charged with second degree arson and second degree burglary, in connection with a fire earlier this month at the Forest City Police Department. He is also accused of stealing an AR-15 rifle from the department.

Two weeks before the fire officials say graffiti was painted on the front of the police department. Three nights after the fire, an officer who was working alone suffered a concussion when he was struck on the head by an unknown individual. At this time those acts of violence are not being traced back to Ellenbecker.

As for the special agents, they have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Ellenbecker remains hospitalized and will be booked into the Winnebago Jail Upon his release.
