Cigarette to blame in deck fire

Updated:

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- An early morning deck fire is a reminder of the dangers of cigarettes.

A woman feeding her baby early Saturday morning says she saw flames outside her window in a four-plex condominium on the 1900 block of Greenfield Lane SW.

According to the Rochester Fire Department, the flames appeared to be coming from the apartment above her.

She woke her husband, who then unsuccessfully used a fire extinguisher on a planter on the deck.

The fire department was called and used another fire extinguisher.

Crews say the fire was caused by an improperly discarded cigarette, which lit the dry peat moss in the planter.

The owner of the condo admitted he was out smoking earlier. Estimated damage is around $10,000.
