Rochester hosts stand down

For the first time Rochester hosted the Minnesota Stand-down. The Stand-down is a collection of vendors and volunteers brought together to assist war veterans that are in need.

Veteran Law Director, Sara Sommarstrom said, "Primarily the veterans served us first and to see so many veterans that are struggling both in this economy but also generally with mental health issues, substance abuse issues, living arrangements. Being able to give back and help them for the service they gave us is really important."

The event provides services to homeless veterans and veterans in danger of losing their home.

Judges and volunteers were available for veterans today to resolve pending cases from anywhere in the state of Minnesota. Veterans groups were there for support-services for those dealing with difficulties.

The stand-down also included free lunches and haircuts, assistance with benefits, taxes, housing, employment counseling and for some a place of comfort.

Goody bags and blankets were also donated to those in need.

Many Volunteers from Rochester showed up for the event, including ten judges and over a dozen attorneys.
