Driver charged in death of northern Iowa girl

NORTHWOOD, Iowa (AP) -- Vehicular homicide charges have been filed against the driver of a pickup truck accused of hitting a 7-year-old girl who was walking to a stopped school bus in rural Worth County.

Kadyn Halverson, of rural Kensett, died on May 10. The Iowa State Patrol says she was walking to the bus that had its lights flashing and stop sign extended when she was struck. The driver fled the scene.

The patrol says 31-year-old Aaron Gunderson, of Northwood, was charged Wednesday with two counts of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident resulting in death.

He's being held in the Worth County jail on $85,000 bond. His case is not listed on the state's online court system, and it's not immediately known if he has an attorney.
