Baby's death remains mystery

NEAR HOMER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Labor day turned out to be anything but another ordinary holiday for authorities in Winona County.

Monday afternoon they were called to the Mississippi River after a disturbing find.

A baby was found floating in the Mississippi River near Winona.

Winona County Sheriff, Dave Brand, said the baby's body was reported at about 2:20p.m. The 7-pound girl was found about 6 miles southeast of Winona, floating in a plastic bag down the main channel of the river.

Authorities aren't releasing much information, including who reportedly found the body.

"We called in the BCA and we have an agent assigned to the case, working with us. Our water patrol was out yesterday and they responded immediately.

We have investigators assigned to the case and we're working closely with the County Attorney's Office and the investigation continues," stated Winona Sheriff Office's Chief Deputy, Ron Ganrude.

At this time the cause of death is unknown. Authorities are vague with the information they do have.

More details are set to be released Wednesday.
