Rochester firefighter killed in off-duty accident in grove of trees


ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A member of the Rochester Fire Department has been killed in an accident while working in a grove of trees at his home in northeast Rochester.

Battalion Chief Chuck Hermann died Thursday afternoon when a tree he was cutting down on his property fell on him. 

"The Rochester Fire Department suffered a loss of one of its members this afternoon in a non-duty related accident," said Deputy Chief Vance Swisher in a written statement.  The media was asked to not release Hermann's name until Friday morning, after all family members were notified.

Hermann, 50 joined the Rochester Fire Department in 1981, and was very involved in the Rochester community and local charitable organizations.

All uniformed officers in the city will be wearing a mourning badge in honor of Hermann

He leaves behind a wife and five kids.
