Red Wing student sues over school dress-up day

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A new federal lawsuit claims that for several years Red Wing High School students mocked African-Americans in a homecoming week event by wearing low-slung pants, oversized jewelry and flashing gang signs.

The Star Tribune reports that the lawsuit filed in federal court last week alleges the activity was an exercise in bigotry that administrators failed to stop.

The lawsuit says the behavior sent Quera Pruitt, one of the few black students at the school, into a deep depression. She graduated in 2010.

Pruitt is suing for more than $75,000.

Superintendent Karsten Anderson says the district denies that it created a racially hostile environment.
