NORTHWOOD, Iowa (KTTC) -- There was an emotional outpouring of love and concern Thursday in Northwood, as people stepped up to do what they could for a family hit by the worst kind of tragedy.

The stoplights were all blinking red in the middle of town, as the Worth County Jaycees manned temporary 4-way stop signs to try to fill boots and buckets with "Koins for Kadyn."

Kadyn Halverson, 7, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on May 10th southeast of Northwood, as she ran across a country road to get on her school bus.  An arrest has been made and criminal charges are pending.

But in the meantime, neighbors dug into their pockets and took out their checkbooks late Thursday afternoon to try to help the family with the funeral expenses.  One little girl dressed in pink approached the teenagers manning one of the stop signs to offer a few dollars.  One farmer heading into town driving his John Deere tractor pulling a grain trailer stopped to dig into his pockets.  Many over-the-road truck drivers just heading through town were volunteering their change.

They couldn't do anything about what had happened, but that didn't mean they couldn't step up and be a part of this, a spirit of what makes Northwood the town that it is.

One of the Jaycees organizing the fundraiser, Shane Buenzow, was grateful for the community's support.

"All the money has been counted up," Buenzow tells KTTC NewsCenter.  "And the grand total raised at the 'Koins for Kadyn' event and deposited into the Kadyn Halverson Memorial Fund is.....$3,145.89!!!!! Thank you for your support!!!!"

If you were not able to make it to Northwood on Thursday, here's how you can help -- you can still send a check to the Northwood State Bank at 900 Central Avenue, Northwood, Iowa, 50459... attention "The Kadyn Halverson Memorial Fund."
