Family of little girl killed in hit and run: "There's no reason why"

NORTHWOOD, Iowa (KTTC)-- The family of 7-year-old Kadyn Halvorson who was hit and killed by a pickup truck Tuesday morning while trying to get on her school bus, says they are "heartbroken," by her loss.

Kadyn was a first grade student at Northwood-Kensett Elementary School in Northwood, Iowa where her classmates are also mourning her loss.

As for Kadyn's family, they are not lacking for comforting symbols of her presence around a family farm in Northwood.

"She was so excited, she used to come out here as often as she could and help my brother. She liked how cute the calves were and how they were little like her," says Kristen Meyer, Kadyn's Aunt and Godmother.

Meyer and her family are finding are also finding comfort in other memories scattered around the farm where Kadyn used to play, like her little pink bike her grandmother bought her just last Saturday.

"We just remember how happy she was, and how much joy she brought to our lives," recalls Meyer.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crossing arms on the school bus Kadyn was about to get on were fully extended Tuesday morning as 31-year-old Aaron Gunderson allegedly hit and killed the little girl. Family members are still wondering how it all could've happened.

"There's no reason why, there's nothing you can do to comprehend it, there's no words... it's hard for everybody involved," says Kadyn's Aunt.

Gunderson was taken into custody and questioned by officials on Tuesday but was later released. Charges are currently pending a full investigation, but Kadyn's family is simply trying to remember the legacy of joy and happiness she left behind.

"It's still a shock and we have a lot of why questions, but we have each other for support and that's all we can do."

Visitation for Kadyn will be this Friday at the Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood, Iowa from 4-8p.m. Her funeral will take place Saturday at 11a.m. in Manly at the Bethel United Methodist Church and the public is invited to attend both services.
