Community mourns loss of 7-year-old killed in hit-and-run

NORTHWOOD, Iowa (KTTC)-- Classmates of 7-year-old Kadyn Halvorson are trying to cope with her loss, after the Northwood, Iowa first grader was killed while crossing the street to get on her school bus Tuesday morning.

"People just kept saying that guy should've stopped to check instead of driving away," says 7-year-old Parker Cota, one of Kadyn's best friends.

Parker's mom usually drops him off at daycare with Kadyn right before school, which is where the little girl was when she was hit on Raven Road. But

"What do you say? I'm sorry," says Parker's mom Stephanie.

Stephanie says she works with Kadyn's mom and was with her when she got that news that there had been an accident. The crash happened two miles north of 410th Street around 8 a.m., Iowa State Patrol is still investigating the hit-and-run and has not identified the driver who hit Kadyn.

"If we weren't late this morning, he would've been getting on the bus this morning with her... it could've been him," says Stephanie.

Grief councilors were on hand at the Northwood Elementary School Tuesday to help kids cope, especially those who were on the bus that Kadyn was trying to get onto and saw the crash.

"I saw only Kadyn laying down on the ground and her bag and her lunch box scattered over the road... and then we all had to move to the back and I started crying really hard," recalls Parker.

The vehicle and the male suspect were taken into custody by the Worth County Sheriff's Department about two miles from the accident. Officials say the driver was questioned but later released.
