Iowa hit-and-run kills a 7-year old girl

NORTHWOOD, Iowa (KTTC) -- Authorities are investigating a hit-and-run that killed a 7-year old girl.

The accident happened around 8am, Tuesday morning on the outskirts of Northwood, along Raven Avenue, in Worth county. This picture, courtesy of the Globe Gazette, shows the scene as officials arrived to investigate.

A routine morning became anything but for one family. The child's babysitter said, Caden Halverson, a first grader at Northwood Kensett Elementary, was struck and killed by a pick-up truck. The victim's babysitter, told us the child was being picked up by the bus, when a southbound vehicle failed to yield to the buses stop-arm and flashing lights, striking and killing the child.

According to the Iowa State Patrol the driver fled the scene, but was later apprehended.

The babysitter told us, it appeared as though the vehicle never slowed down. Stating it all happened so fast there was nothing anyone could do. Neighbors told the Newscenter the bus driver tried to gesture to the child not to cross the road, because of the fast on-coming vehicle, but it was too late.

At this time the Worth County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol are not releasing the name of the driver. The school district's superintendent, Tom Nugent said crisis counselors were on hand for staff and students. He wouldn't  release any more information, but expects to do so at a later time.
