Rural Austin grandmother scammed

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- A rural Austin grandmother was scammed on April Fool's Day by a woman claiming to be her granddaughter.

Authorities say the victim received a call saying her granddaughter had been involved in a car crash in Mexico, was in jail and needed bail money.

The person requested $3,800.

The victim immediately sent the money via Western Union to Mexico.

It wasn't until Sunday afternoon, when the victim contacted her granddaughter asking when she was going pay back the loaned money, only to find out she had been scammed.
