MINNEAPOLIS (KTTC) -- Rochester Lourdes is moving on to the semifinals in the Boy's State Basketball Tournament, after beating Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 45-37 on Wednesday at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
The last Rochester high school team to win a state championship in boys basketball was the 1969 John Marshall Rockets.
On Wednesday night, the Lourdes Eagles moved one step closer to playing for a State Title. Some of the same athletes who helped the Lourdes football team snap a 31-year drought for Rochester football back with a Class 2A championship in November are on this basketball team.
Both Lourdes and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder are unranked. The Eagles looked sharp here in the first with the pass to Shane McGrath down low... he goes up strong for the early two.
Later on... Nick Jensen with the pass to Alex Kapraun... he dribbles to make some room before sinking the long two ball.
The Eagles show some aggressiveness on defense... Nick Jensen gets the takeaway then escorts the ball downcourt before dishing to Shane McGrath for the finish.
Jim Daly and his Eagles would take a 6-point lead to the half.
Lourdes would keep up the good work in the second... Chris Eickemeyer pulling down the offensive rebound here... then sending it back up and in.
Lourdes really working it well down low... Jensen to McGrath again on the baseline... no problem for the "Athlete of the Week."
Long Prairie-Grey Eagle relied heavily on Duane Miller for their points tonight... the junior poured in 15 points including this 3-pointer for the Thunder.
But Lourdes held off the Thunder tonight... they'd bury the dagger on this play... Kapraun to McGrath... just playing centerfield on the other end for two... and the whistle.
The Eagles are in the semi's! Final score: Lourdes 45, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 37.
