Authorities respond to deadly accident

WELCH, Minn. (KTTC) -- Wednesday afternoon at 2:15 the Goodhue County sheriff's office received a call something had gone wrong at the Welch Village Ski Area.

"Members of the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office, Red Wing Ambulance, and a medical helicopter responded to the scene," Captain Pat Thompson of the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office.

But emergency crews were too late, George Conway had already passed away.

While still under investigation, the Sheriff's Office believes the 65 year old's death was an accident.

Captain Thompson explained, "We have witness that say it looked like he was out of control, skiing out of control, lost his balance."

It's at that point, Conway slammed into a chair-lift tower.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's office is still unsure of how Conway lost control.

The Sheriff's Office will not finish it's investigation until it receives the autopsy results from the medical examiner office giving Conway's official cause of death.

The Welch Village Ski Area released a statement today expressing condolence for the Conway family.

The statement also says Conway's accident was the first fatality in the ski area's 45 year history.
