More women in agriculture

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Women in agriculture is a growing trend. Wednesday they were treated to a special presentation recognizing the important role they play within a family farming operation.

AgStar held its annual educational series for farm women and this year it focused on balancing work and family life on the farm.

2007 statistics show that nationally more than one million women are farm operators.

Agstar's Cathy Riley says women own a large majority of acres.

Across the state more than 30,000 women are farm operators.

"Quite often women are involved in the operation from maybe grain marketing to maybe making some decisions on their inputs, maybe some of their financing decisions. Sometimes the roll of the women in agriculture is overlooked," said Riley.

According to USDA statistics, between 2002 and 2007, women farm operators increased by more than 8,000 in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
