Deer are still testing negative for CWD

NEAR PINE ISLAND, Minn. (KTTC) -- After weeks of testing deer for Chronic Wasting Disease, near Pine Island, the results are all negative.

In the quest to sample 900 deer for the disease, so far more than 645 deer have been killed by the sharpshooters and landowners. All of the killed deer are being tested for CWD, but results of 200 killed fawns will not count towards the total sample. Earlier this week more than 300 landowner's permits expired, leaving USDA sharpshooters as the last hope to reaching their goal.

All of this stems back to last November when a hunter killed a deer near pine island that tested positive for CWD.

The DNR's Big Game Coordinator expects sharpshooters to reach their sample limit within the next few weeks.
