Austin Medical Center is Expanding

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- Austin Medical Center is getting a $28-million dollar makeover. Monday,  they released details on an exciting expansion beginning this summer. Not only will the facilities size increase, it will also create jobs in the medical field.

While the slow economy has stopped some sectors from expansion and job-growth, that's not the case at Austin Medical Center.

"The expansion will also result in an additional 70 positions, nine of which will be physicians and advanced practice providers," said Rod Nordeng, Austin Medical Center's VP of Operations and Human Resources.

From the top to the bottom, the medical center will have a different look and feel, including a new pharmacy.

"The lower level will have a new musculoskeletal program space area, along with rehab services. On first floor we'll have a new retail area including a mayo clinic store," said Nordeng.

Cardiology, family medicine, pediatrics, and OB/GYN will fill the second and third floors. The medical center's CEO says the most unique part of the expansion will be the Medical Home.

"The project sets aside certain space that we call the neighborhood or huddle room where actually the patients entire health care team can come and be with the patient as we talk about how best can we care for them," said CEO, Dr. David Agerter.

Community-wide the medical center is hoping to raise $2.5-million dollars. The entire project is set to be complete in the next 2 to 3 years.
