New wind farm opens near Albert Lea

NEAR ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KTTC) -- Minnesota is now number 4 in the nation in wind energy and a new wind farm in southern Minnesota is now producing electricity.

Wisconsin Power and Light Company has announced it will begin to produce emission-free energy at the Bent Tree Wind Farm near Albert Lea.

The new wind farm consists of more than 120 turbines capable of producing up to 201 mega-watts of wind energy, which is enough to power about 50,000 homes.

This new wind farm and the help of three others that came online last year helped push Minnesota to 4th in the nation for wind turbine installation, up from 7th place the year before.

These U.S. wind energy rankings are issued quarterly by the American Wind Energy Association.

On a national scale, the wind energy industry employs more than 18,500 workers in the manufacturing sector.

Just recently the state offered a rebate program for homeowners and small businesses towards small wind turbine installation costs.
