New mammography equipment at AL Medical Center

ALBERT LEA, MINN. (KTTC) -- Albert Lea Medical Center has some new technology for women.

It's a new state-of-the-art full field digital mammography machine.

It was purchased through "Project Pink", a fundraising event.

The medical center and its foundation challenged community members to raise money for the new equipment.

They succeeded and raised more than $117,000.

Mary Christensen is a medical doctor at the facility and explained the new technology.

"They've shown that you can detect more breast cancers in the dense breast tissue, and that's a hard area to see when there is already dense tissue. It's kind of like hunting for a needle in a haystack," said Christensen.

Christensen says the machine also emits a lower level of radiation, making it safer for the 5500 women who annually receive mammograms.
