Get Fit/Be Fit Challenge kicks off in Austin

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- A community wellness program in Austin is giving motivation to more than 700 people to change their lifestyles. It's called the Get Fit - Be Fit Challenge and it kicked off today.

This is the 5th year of the program and it just keeps growing in popularity. The programs participants can chose to "get fit" and focus on losing weight or "be fit" as they focus more on eating healthy.

For some, getting in shape is more than just fulfilling a new years resolution.

"I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and I definitely need to lose the weight," said Lynette Zaren, a Get Fit Participant.

For Lynette Zaren it means a change of lifestyle and one that could save her life.

"It was really, really scary. I knew I was at risk for it, because it's genetic in my family, it's hereditary, but I didn't think it was going to be me," explained Zaren.

While working towards her goal of losing weight, Lynette is participating in the Get Fit Challenge with her sister Carol.

"I'm excited about it, I'm really excited about it, because I've got a great support system," said Zaren.

During last years competition, Carol lost more than 14 pounds. She attributes it to eating healthier.

"I thought I was eating healthy, but I really wasn't. I've learned to change to whole grains, when I do. Fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, cans if you have too, but the fresher the better. I've learned to eat a lot healthier," said Carol Perleberg.

The program goes for the next 12-weeks. During that time period participants can chart their progress online. At the end of the challenge a winner will be chosen from each participating team.
