A popular pastime this Winter: Ice Fishing

ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KTTC) -- It's one of Minnesota's best known winter hobbies: Ice Fishing. An age-old sport that anyone can partake in as long as they have a little bit of patience.

"Oh, that's a nice Crappie. Wow, caught a Crappie,"exclaimed fisherman Dave Lundak.

Ronald Hansen and Dave Lundak both have their reasons for sitting on a frozen Fountain Lake.

"I do a lot of ice fishing in the winter primarily because you can't golf, can't garden. It's a way to get outside and enjoy the outdoors," said Lundak.

"It's gotten down to where I'm mostly fishing, because I can sit and enjoy it," said Hansen.

For those who cringe at the thought of sitting out in the cold, Ron said it's really not that bad.

"It's really nice out here. We have a heater, we have an ice house," said Hansen.

I decided that I should sit down with the guys and try my hand at ice fishing. More than five minutes had passed and I still didn't have a nibble on my line. Lucky for me, I was in good company. Anglers told me the hobby of ice fishing is about being with good friends and making great memories.

"Just the camaraderie with people. Catching fish, eating fish," said Hansen.

Yet, sometimes pure bliss can come in the form of silence.

"It's really quiet out here. A relaxing way to spend the day. No text messages, e-mail, meeting,"said Lundak.

In a short time the two fisherman had caught more than 20 pan fish, including Crappies, Sun Fish and Perch.
