Slick roads imperil motorists in southwest Iowa

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa authorities warn that roadways are slick in southwest and south-central Iowa, thanks to a wintry mix of rain, ice and some snow.

In northwest Iowa, heavy snow and high winds are expected Friday from a weather system heading east from Nebraska. A winter storm warning is in effect until Saturday.

A separate storm system coming from the south is causing the southwest Iowa problems.

The Iowa Department of Transportation's 511 road conditions map doesn't show any weather-related road closures, but several highways are partially covered with a potentially dangerous mix of frozen moisture.

The latest road conditions are available online at www.511ia.org or by dialing 511 within Iowa, 800-288-1047 outside of the state.
