Riverland's Albert Lea campus constructs wind turbine

ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KTTC) -- Riverland's Albert Lea Campus will soon look a little bit different.

Monday morning trucks and a crane arrived to begin constructing a wind turbine.

The turbine will produce 30 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power a small business.

William Osborn is a student in the wind energy program and said he is excited to work on the equipment.

"In the bottom of this tower there is a hydraulic unit that actually raises and lowers the mast. So, instead of climbing a tower like you would on a large turbine, this tower will lay down so we'll be able to open things up and work on it on the ground. It's a 100 foot tower, but when it lays down, it'll be right here on the parking lot," explained Osborn.

The turbine is expected to be fully constructed and running by the end of the week.
