Plenty of job seekers in Mower County

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- Some economists have painted the picture that the nation is out of a recession, but that's hard for some local residents to believe.

In Austin, the Minnesota Workforce Center sees a constant flow of people coming and going daily.

Mini malls and big box retailers give job seekers a glimmer of hope, that maybe they can find work.

"I'm always on the hunt for work," said Ladj Sako.

The problem, though, is finding signs that read "Now Hiring". Ladj Sako was let go a year ago, when the moving company he worked for closed its doors.

He has discovered that getting a job interview is only half the battle.

"You get the impression that they're going to call you. You sometimes go for a job interview, they say, 'Oh, we'll get back to you,' and that's it," explained Sako.

Job hunting is a game of patience and persistence. Melissa Huntley has been playing the field since August.

"I was working at cost-cutters. I decided to go back to school, but I missed the deadline. So, I've been trying to find anything for now, until next fall," said Huntley.

She's hoping the season of perpetual bliss brings just that.

"It's the holidays. I'm hoping that maybe something will come up, even at one of the local Hallmark stores, anything, it'd be nice," stated Huntley.

Until hardy job seekers get the call offering them a position, they said they'll continue their search.

"You just keep hunting, hunting you know, until things can change," said Sako.

According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, for the month of September, Mower county had a 5.5% unemployment rate.

Unemployment was slightly higher in the city of Austin, at 6.2%.
