Jennifer Gumbel (Republican)

Jennifer grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where if your parents didn't run a small-business, they worked for someone who did.  Therefore, since childhood, she has grown up to understand naturally the central role small businesses have in a vibrant economy.

Education & Marriage

After her South Dakota early years, Jennifer came to Minnesota to study at the Association Free Lutheran Bible School in Plymouth, a two-year college. In 2000 she graduated with a degree in General Bible and then moved to the University of Minnesota where she  graduated with degrees in Political Science and German in 2004.  During her years at the University of Minnesota, she met her husband-to-be, Axel, at church and they were married in 2002. She interned as a constituent caseworker at Senator Norm Coleman's St. Paul office and she also interned in Berlin Germany with a member of the German Bundestag, Klaus Hagemann. Jennifer speaks German fluently, which is in no small part attributable to her German born husband and his family.

Career & Activities

After graduation from the University of Minnesota she decided she wanted to be a lawyer so she selected Drake University Law School in Des Moines, IA for her professional study. While there, she worked for Iowa Legal Aid.

In 2007 Jennifer Gumbel graduated with honors from Drake University Law School. She also earned a public service certificate and was honored with the Timothy N. Carlucci Award for Civility and Professionalism. While at Drake, Jennifer served on the editorial staff and as a note editor for the Drake Journal of Agricultural Law, where her student note, "Got Milch?: The Effect of Foreign Citizenship on Agricultural Estate Planning in the Wake of European Dairy Immigration," was published in Spring 2007.  This activity combined her interest in estate planning for both farmers and non-citizens. Jennifer also served as president of the Drake International Law Society and was a member of the negotiations team and meditation team. In addition, Jennifer interned with the Federal District Court in Des Moines, Iowa. While at Drake, Jennifer was licensed as a student attorney and worked at Iowa Legal Aid, serving clients with government benefits, land-lord tenant disputes, and family law issues.

Jennifer took the bar exams and became licensed in Minnesota and Florida. Jennifer served as a judicial law clerk for Judge Donald E. Rysavy and Judge Fred W. Wellmann with the 3rd District Court in Mower County. Working in that position gave Jennifer valuable experience in probate, real estate and property law, contracts, criminal law and family law. She is particularly interested in assisting business owners, farmers and families in the areas of real estate law, business law, and estate planning. Jennifer shares her enthusiasm about estate planning with her blog, Minnesota Estate Planning and Probate Blog.

Professionally, Jennifer is a member of the American Bar Association, Florida Bar Association and Minnesota Bar Association. She is also active with the Minnesota Bar Association Wills for Heroes program, which provides free estate planning assistance to first responders. Following that she joined the Scott K. Springer Law Office in Preston, forming Springer & Gumbel, P.A.

With that career move, she and Axel moved to Le Roy to split the distance between their two work locations.  Jennifer continues to play the clarinet in the Austin Symphony Orchestra and the Austin Community Band. She is active in the LeRoy Foundation and the LeRoy Lutheran Church. She serves on the Minnesota 10th District Bar Association Ethics Board and the Minnesota Bar Association Membership Committee.
