Decision 2010: Senate District 27

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC--) Elections are quickly approaching, and candidates are still hitting the campaign trail, vying for your vote.

KTTC-TV partnered with KSMQ-TV for Election 2010; a series of conversations designed to aid you in casting your vote November 2nd.

The latest debate included Senator Dan Sparks and his opponent, Kathy Green. The two candidates are both hoping to represent Senate District 27.  The district covers all of Mower and Freeborn counties, as well as 4 townships in Fillmore County.

Currently, Sparks is serving his second term as District 27's senator. For the past few years his competitor, Kathy Green, has vested her time in focusing on education, by serving on the Austin school board and the Minnesota School Board Association.

One of the issues at hand between the opponents is, how the state should go about limiting local government tax increases.

"There is one type of budget that I will not support and that's a budget that is going to force our seniors and middle class people to pay more property tax to stay in their homes. I don't think that's fair and that's something that we need to address," said the Senator.

"Our property taxes are going up due to the local government aid and the equalization funds being pulled back. So what we do truly need, is  to have a budget that is stable, because we have programs that were not sustainable when they were put in place, the funding wasn't secured to keep them going. So, what we truly need to do, is get the budget in place so we can be responsive," said Green.

The interview with Senator Sparks and Kathy Green will air in its entirety on KSMQ-TV, October 28th, beginning at 6:30 PM.
