Mike Benson (Republican)

Mike and his wife, Susan, live in southwest Rochester. They have four children: Briana Pearsall lives in New Jersey with husband Ryan and granddaughter Delaney; daughter Holly Erickson lives in Maryland with husband Luke and granddaughter Jael; daughter Michele McGraw lives in Virginia with husband Andrew; and son James is a psychology student at Lincoln Christian University. Susan is an alumnus of Crossroads College and Minnesota State University, Mankato, and is employed in the Rochester school system as a special education para-professional.

Mike is employed as an Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Director of Human Resources at Crossroads College, Rochester, Minnesota. Mike was hired at Crossroads College in July 2004 and started the Compass Adult Degree Completion Program as the Director of Adult Studies at Crossroads College. He also served as the college's interim president from 2006 until 2008 during the process to fill the vacancy.

Mike began his work career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1973 at age 17 as a clerk. He was promoted to supervision in 1979 and held a number of management positions until his retirement in 2004 after 30-plus years of service. He served as Postmaster of Rochester, Minnesota, from 1988 until 1995 and subsequently served as Postmaster of Cleveland, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1998 he was appointed and served as a District Manager for an area of southeastern Pennsylvania consisting of 362 post offices and 3 processing plants with 6000 employees, over 1 million customers, and $1.5 billion in revenue. Mike also served on numerous special assignments during his postal career. From 1996 until 1998, he served as a member of the National Joint Steering Committee for Quality of Work Life and Employee Involvement, a joint project between the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and the U.S. Postal Service, and also on the 1994 National Contract Negotiations Team.

Mike has a BA in Organizational Management and a MBA from Eastern University in Saint Davids, Pennsylvania.

He volunteers as a Kid's Hope mentor at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School in Rochester. Mike has served in civic leadership positions on a number of boards throughout his career, including the Crossroads College Trustee Board and the Combined Federal Campaign of Cleveland, Ohio.  He was co-chair of the Salvation Army of Streator, Illinois. He also serves as the Republican precinct committeeman and is an alternate delegate to the Republican State Convention.
