MN DNR will auction wildlife area to reduce deficit

STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will auction 28 acres of woodland, ponds and wetland in Stillwater Thursday to help reduce the state budget.

The state must sell more than $6 million worth of land by June to help its bottom line.

The minimum bid for the former Jackson Wildlife Management Area is about $178,000. The DNR rejected an offer of $10,000 down and $17,000 a year for the next decade from the Brown's Creek Watershed District. It wanted to protect the land and use it for demonstrating water management techniques.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press says Archibald and Margaret Jackson donated the land to the DNR in 1974 and specified that it be preserved as a wildlife sanctuary.
