Rally shows support for schools

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) Many parents, teachers and students came out Tuesday to a rally in support of voting yes to two operating referendum questions that will appear on the November ballot.

If it passed, residents would pay higher taxes but help Rochester Public Schools avoid making five million in budget cuts. It would provide approximately $806 per pupil for the 2011 to 2012 school year.

RPS is facing five million dollars in budget cuts unless voters agree to higher taxes.

Many RPS parents, teachers and even students expressed their concern over how the cuts would affect classroom learning when RPS is already facing high class numbers.

"We have high numbers of students. We're not able to meet the needs of all the students and that's stressful and not fair to the kids," said Jody Peterson, a RPS teacher and parent.
