Texting Kills thumb bands given to drivers in Iowa

MASON CITY, Iowa. (KTTC) --  It's a habit that can kill, texting behind the wheel. Furthermore, it's also illegal. One county in Iowa has devised a strategy to remind folks, before it's too late.

Law enforcement hopes the roads of Iowa will get safer. Drivers caught texting behind the wheel are now given a reminder that it's against the law. Deputies are giving folks blue or pink thumb bands to wear, which are imprinted with the words"Txting Kills".

Cerro Gordo's Sheriff, Kevin Pals, says it's a creative awareness tool, since most people text with their thumbs.

"I've got e-mails from some parents and aunts and uncles in the area, even Des Moines, wanting us to send them some. They want to give them to their nieces and nephews and their sons and daughters, hopefully to remind them not to do it.Its a great awareness factor that has just hit big time right now."

The texting law went into effect this year, but no tickets are being written for violating the law until after July 1, 2011.
